J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s first ever Cabinet meeting on Monday saw a series of populist decisions being taken.

Ms. Mufti announced the implementation of the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Food Entitlement Scheme (MMSFES) from July 1, 2016. Under the scheme, 5 kg of additional foodgrains per person per month will be provided to consumers in the State, apart from the 5 kg provided under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).

The move is aimed at quelling the widespread protests following the implementation of the NFSA, which resulted in a reduction in monthly rations. Further, instead of wheat, the government has again decided to distribute flour.

“Ms. Mufti’s government is committed to the economic and social well-being of its citizens as was envisioned by Mufti Sahab. With these ground-breaking measures, J&K will become a model welfare State in the country,” said State Education Minister Nayeem Akhtar.

Reaching out to government employees, Ms. Mufti announced an additional pension to employees attaining the age of 80, 85, 90, 95 and 100 years. The Cabinet also approved the release of dearness allowance at 6 per cent of basic pay.

Women police stations

Fulfilling a long-pending demand, Ms. Mufti approved the setting up of women’s police stations in Anantnag, Baramulla, Rajouri and Udhampur districts with 208 posts sanctioned.
