The Gujarat government on Thursday declared that the year 2012 would be celebrated as the ‘Year of Youth Power,' to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

The announcement was made by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a huge gathering of youths at Mahatma Mandir here to celebrate the occasion.

The former President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, present on the occasion, said: “Like Swami Vivekananda, the youth of India should have firm faith in [the] self and then resolve to utilise the same faith in the service of nation through sheer hard work.”

“I can do it, we can do it and India can do it,” he said, should be a mantra for the youth.

Mr. Modi said Vivekananda had been source of inspiration to the youth. “He interpreted the Vedas to explain highest forms of spirituality in a simple language in order to rake up inner strength [for] nation building,” Mr. Modi said.
