A mob on Monday dragged two rape-and-murder accused out of a police station and lynched them, at Tezu town in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Officials said the mob overpowered the personnel manning the police station, dragged the two accused out of the lock-up to the market square and stoned and bludgeoned them to death. It also tried to set their bodies on fire before security forces intervened. The two were identified as Sanjay Sobar, 30, and Jagdish Lohar, 26. They were tea plantation workers from Assam.

Officials said a five-and-a-half-year old girl went missing from a village under Wakro police station on February 12. Two of the girl’s relatives spotted her body lying in a pool of blood in a jungle near Namgo village. Unconfirmed reports said she had been beheaded.

Sandip Goel, Arunachal Pradesh’s Director General of Police said Sobar and Lohar were arrested in connection with the disappearance, suspected rape and murder of the girl. The duo had reportedly confessed to have committed the crime.
