West Bengal Animal Resource Development Minister Nure Alam Chowdhury was allegedly assaulted and confined in a room for several hours inside a college at Rampurhat in the State’s Birbhum district on Sunday.

Those responsible were agitated over a land dispute that involves a trust with which the Minister is associated and a place of worship. Mr. Chowdhury was released in the evening after the police intervened.

Large tracts of land were owned by the Minister’s forefathers who donated it for setting up a college and other welfare institutions. A few years ago a place of worship was allegedly built on the land owned by the trust.
