Hurriyat Conference (moderate) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday welcomed the statement of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram that the government recognised there were different shades of opinion in Jammu and Kashmir and that it would hold consultations with all sections. The Mirwaiz said there was a change in the mindset of New Delhi.

Addressing the All-India Editors’ Conference on Social and Infrastructure Issues here, Mr. Chidambaram said the whole effort would be quiet until the contours of a political solution to the problem were found.

This was essential to take the process forward, he said adding that the ultimate solution must be honourable and acceptable to the vast majority of the people of the State and must recognise its unique history and geography. “There is a political question that is to be resolved. There is no need to say that we will copy the solutions found in respect of other problems in the country. That may not apply here.”
