Mirchpur residents continue protests

January 25, 2011 01:24 am | Updated November 28, 2021 08:42 pm IST - Jind (Haryana):

The residents of Mirchpur and adjoining villages, whose sit-in protest at the railway tracks and on highways here entered the 10th day on Monday, remained firm on their demand for a fresh probe into the killing of two Dalits last year after which 98 members of their community were booked.

Jind and parts of Hisar and Bhiwani remained cut off from other parts of the State for the third day on Monday as the members of the pre-dominant Jat community held protests at various places, including at various link roads in the Jat heartland of Haryana.

Even as Heavy police and paramilitary force had been deployed in many parts of the districts, traffic on several State highways and national roads passing through Jind and Hisar was disrupted with bus services remaining affected.

The villagers are protesting the booking of 98 members of their community in the case relating to the killing of 70-year-old Dalit Tara Chand and his teenaged daughter Suman in Hisar district's Mirchpur village on April 21 last year. The protesters are demanding that probe be held by a Special Investigation Team either at Rohtak or Hisar and the accused be lodged in either of the two jails.
