Minister’s son questioned over involvement in Jeypore attack

The Koraput district police interrogated son of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and Odisha’s Mass Education Minister in Bhubaneswar in relation to the case of an attack on three family members of Congress leader Taraprasad Bahinipati in a hotel in Jeypore of Koraput district on April 10 night.

Speaking to The Hindu , Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP) Awinash Kumar said the interrogation was part of the continuing investigation to nab culprits involved in the post-election violence. He informed that a team from Koraput district police with support from the Bhubaneswar police conducted the interrogation at Capital police station Bhubaneswar.

He, however, did not reveal much regarding the information procured from this interrogation.

In the FIR filed by Mr. Bahinipati in relation to the attack on his three family members, he has named nine persons associated with the BJD, including State Minister Rabi Narayan Nanda and his son Bunty Nanda. According to police sources, from the CCTV footage of the hotel where the attack took place, the miscreants directly involved in the attack have been identified. The persons identified included the district youth BJD president of Koraput, Dharmendra Adhikari, who has now been suspended from the party.

After the gruesome attack, Mr. Bahinipati alleged that the State minister’s son was also involved in the, attack although he was not seen in the CCTV footage as he waited outside the hotel.

Last week, Mr. Bahinipati along with senior Congress leaders like Narasingha Mishra and Kishore Patel had met with the Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, Prakash Mishra, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits behind attack on his family members.

Till now, no one has been arrested.

The Koraput SP said special squads of police were busy raiding places in and outside the State to nab the culprits.
