Three militants attack Army camp in Kashmir, shot dead

October 06, 2016 07:13 am | Updated November 17, 2021 02:35 am IST - Srinagar

The militants opened fire at the camp of 30 Rashtriya Rifles around 5 a.m., Army officials said.

Three miltants were killed during an early morning attack on an Army camp at Langate in north Kashmir.

Separately, officials said the Army foiled three infiltrations along the Line of Control (LoC) on Wednesday night.

The militants opened fire at the camp of 30 Rashtriya Rifles around 5 a.m., Army officials said.

“The terrorists fired at two posts and tried to get away. But the forces immediately engaged them, and in the exchange of fire that followed, all the three terrorists were killed,” an officer in the Army’s Northern Command said.

Three weapons were recovered from the militants and search operations were on around the site.

There have been repeated ceasefire violations in the last few days following the Army’s ‘strikes’ across the LoC; in few instances even 120 mm mortars were used.

The attack comes just a day after National Security Advisor Ajit Doval reportedly informed the Cabinet Committee on Security that terrorists were amassing at launch pads on the other side of the LoC for infiltration.

The Army is on high alert, as it estimates an increase in infiltration attempts and attacks in the next two months in response to the surgical strikes.

Terrorism foremost challenge

Meanwhile, speaking at an event in the national capital, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar expressed concern over the rising incidents of terrorism in recent times and stated that non-traditional threats and terrorism remained the foremost challenges to the South East Asia region.

Mr. Parrikar stressed the need to oppose terrorism resolutely everywhere, delegitimise it as an instrument of state policy and cooperate unreservedly to locate and destroy terrorist networks. He was addressing the 20th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) – Heads of Defence Universities/Colleges/Institutions Meet (HDUCIM) hosted by the National Defence College (NDC) under the Defence Ministry.

Three infiltration bids foiled

A militant was killed on Thursday as Army foiled three infiltration bids, assisted by Pakistani troops, along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

Army foiled an infiltration bid in Naugam sector in the wee hours of Thursday, killing a militant, an Army official said.

The body of the slain militant was recovered during search operations, the official said.

Earlier, Army said three infiltration bids were foiled in Naugam and Rampur sectors on the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir during the night.

He said while two infiltration bids were foiled in Naugam sector, one such attempt was foiled in Rampur sector.

“The infiltration attempts were assisted by Pakistani posts,” the official said.
