Insurgents who had sneaked from the no man’s land ambushed a patrol party of 1/11 Gorkha Rifles near Boundary pillar No. 45 on Friday.

According to reports received on Monday, the personnel were patrolling along the international border to check any attempt to infiltrate into Manipur ahead of the Parliamentary elections. The ambush took place near Zou Khunnou village under Singhat police station limits.

Using sophisticated weapons the insurgents opened fire at the personnel who were on foot patrolling in the mountains. There was immediate retaliation from the personnel. Sources said that there was fierce exchange of fire for some minutes. Later the insurgents retreated and are believed to have rushed to their camps across the international border.

There was no casualty among the personnel. So far it is not known whether there were any injuries among the insurgents.
