Migrants constitute 3.3 per cent of Maharashtra's population

During 1991-2001, 32.8 lakh migrants moved into Maharashtra of which 32.32 lakh, or 3.3 per cent of the total population, were from other States in the country. This was stated in the Economic Survey of Maharashtra tabled in the State Legislature on Tuesday.

48,000 migrants , or 0.05 per cent of the total population, were from other countries.

The total number of emigrants was 8.97 lakh.

Of the 32.32 lakh immigrants , 13.63 lakh or 42.2 per cent moved in for work, making employment a major reason for migration. About 8.05 lakh, or 24.9 per cent migrated along with their family, and 4.68 lakh, or 14.5 per cent migrated after getting married .
