Though a property dispute led to the firing, the death of the youth led to tensions

Tensions prevailed at Jaroda village in Meerut after a youth, Fariyad, died of bullet injuries on Thursday.

The police said unidentified persons from other community shot at Fariyad.

Mohammad Yasin, cleric from the nearby mosque who came to his rescue, also sustained bullet injuries.

Land dispute

Though a property dispute led to the firing, the death of the youth led to tensions.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Meerut, Omkar Singh said Fariyad’s mother, Noorjahan Begum, had bought a piece of agricultural land from Arvind Gupta.

The land originally belonged to Jaipal Singh of Chichoi and Mr. Gupta had bought it in an auction but was unable to take possession of it.

The assailants were Singh’s relatives.

Noorjahan had been trying to get possession of the land.

“Jaipal Singh wanted to teach her a lesson because she had started farming on the land on Thursday morning. Some time in the afternoon, five relatives of Jaipal Singh reached Jaroda village where Fariyad was present and started firing at him,” Mr. Omkar Singh said.

“Though the situation is tense, it is under control. Two platoons of the PAC have been deployed,” he added.
