The Supreme Court on Thursday set up a one-man commission to probe the fire at a fair in Meerut, in which 65 people were killed in 2006.

A Bench of Justices Dipak Misra and V. Gopala Gowda set up the commission headed by Justice S.B. Sinha, a former Supreme Court judge and asked it to submit its report by January 31, 2015.

The Bench ordered interim relief for the victims and their families by directing the Uttar Pradesh government to enhance their compensation. It ordered the government to pay Rs. 5 lakh to families of victims who died in the blaze, Rs. 2 lakh to those seriously injured and Rs. 75,000 to those who sustained minor injuries.

The compensation amounts should be deposited by the government with the Meerut District Judge.

The order was passed on a petition filed by Sanjay Gupta, one of the victims who lost five members of his family in the tragedy.
