Claiming that a constitutional crisis has arisen in Uttar Pradesh as “no such thing as a government” existed there, Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati has demanded imposition of President’s rule.
The former Chief Minister on Friday met Governor B.L. Joshi and apprised him of the “urgent need” of sending a report to the President, recommending invoking Article 356. In a memorandum, the BSP chief accused the Samajwadi Party government of failure to maintain law and order and communal harmony and to provide basic security to the people. It was anarchy and “jungle raj,’’ with criminals, mafia and anti-social elements calling the shots.
Referring to “distribution” of plum posts to ministers, Ms. Mayawati alleged that these posts were being sold by the SP government and demanded an inquiry. She complained that preference was being given to people of a particular caste in prized postings, while the poor, Dalits, backward classes, religious minorities and other deprived sections were at the receiving end.
The government’s failure to fill up vacancies in the Uttar Pradesh SC/ST Commission, Backward Classes Commission, Minorities Commission, the Rajya Mahila Ayog and the Urdu Academy for a year deprived the people of an opportunity of seeking justice, she said.
