The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced introduction of martial arts training in girls’ schools and degree colleges as a tool to defend themselves.

The orders were issued by Mr. Yadav during a review of the “1090 Women Powerline” service on Tuesday. At present, the powerline exists only in Lucknow.

In wake of the Badaun gang rape and murder of two minor cousin sisters the Chief Minister had instructed that the helpline service should be set up in all districts. According to an official spokesman, the Chief Minister said the powerline should be made more effective.

The UP Director-General of Police, Anand Lal Banerjee, and ADG in-charge of women's cell in the DGP office, Sutapa Sanyal, were present at the review meeting. The Chief Minister asked the DG Police and Ms. Sanyal to conduct surprise checks of the 1090 women powerline office here to keep a check on the quality of the service.

According to a spokesman, the CM has already given orders for strict action against those involved in crimes against women. The SSPs and SPs have been asked to personally monitor the functioning of the women helpline services.
