The wife of a manual labour was set on fire by a young man on Saturday after she resisted his rape attempt at Nunabadi village in Saharanpur district. The woman suffered severe burns and has been admitted to the district hospital in a critical condition.

According to the Superintendent of Police (Rural) Jagdeesh Sharma, the accused, who was a neighbour of the woman, entered the house when her husband was away and attempted to rape her.

“When the victim resisted the rape attempt, he poured diesel over her and set her on fire. He then fled from the spot. It was her neighbours who informed the police,” said Mr. Singh.
