Armed Maoists on Saturday torched the control room of a private mobile service provider and destroyed costly equipment in Orissa’s Malkangiri district, police said.

Over 30 rebels stormed into the control room of the Airtel mobile service provider at MV-74 under MV-79 police station, about 70 km from here, and set its high-power generator on fire by sprinkling diesel, Superintendent of Police Satyabrat Bhoi said.

As a result of the attack, services of the mobile company in the district have been hit.

Meanwhile, normal life was affected in Chitrakonda area of the district following a 24-hour bandh call backed by Maoists demanding the status of scheduled tribes for Kondareddy community.

Bandh supporters have blocked the state highway road leading to Chitrakonda by felling trees. The area is totally cut-off, the SP said.

Police, CRPF and SOG personnel were patrolling in the area and efforts are on to clear the blockade, he added.
