A Congress leader was shot dead by Maoists at a village in East Singhbum district of Jharkhand, police said on Wednesday.

Half-a-dozen armed Maoists pumped in bullets on Congress’ Dalbhumgarh Block President Gobardhan Mahali at Majhbhandar village in Ghatsilla sub-division at midnight last night, the police said.

The incident comes three weeks after security personnel stepped up the anti-Maoist operation in Ghatsilla sub-division bordering West Bengal.
