Maoists gunned down two villagers and injured two others early Friday in Bihar's Banka district, police said.

Over thirty armed ultras struck Baratand village and fired several rounds killing two villagers on the spot, DGP Neelmani said. Two others suffered gun-shot injuries and were admitted to a nearby government hospital, where their condition was stated to be serious.

The incident is believed to be in retaliation to the killing of a hardcore Naxalite in the district in 2008, Mr. Neelmani said.

Special task force of the Bihar police assisted by CRPF personnel are engaged in combing operations against the Maoists.
