A two-day bandh called by Maoists and a 12-hr shutdown called by the Congress today affected life in this West Midnapore town.
No untoward incident was however reported during the bandh. Besides Jhargram, joint forces were patrolling Maoist strongholds of Belpahari, Binpur, Lalgarh, Jamboni, Gopiballavpur and Sankhrail as a precautionary measure.
Shops, banks, post offices, educational institutions were closed. Attendance in government offices was thin and vehicles were off the road.
Vehicles, in fewer numbers, were plying on National Highway 6. Local trains were, however, in operation on the Kharagpur-Tatanagar section.
The CPI (Maoist) called a two-day shutdown all over West Bengal starting from today to protest against the arrest of its central committee member Kanchan and four other leaders on December 4.
The Congress has called a 12-hr bandh in East and West Midnapore districts to protest police lathicharge on a Congress delegation in front of the superintendent of police’s office at Tamluk on December 6.
