Ten persons, including a three-year-old girl, were killed when the jeep in which they were travelling fell into a gorge near Purori – an area in Dehradun district’s Chakrata region – on Wednesday.

Four others, including a seven-month-old boy, were injured in the accident, Circle Officer of the Vikas Nagar police station, Swapn Kishore Singh, said.

“The jeep was going from Hayo-Tangri to Vikas Nagar in Dehradun district, when it fell into a gorge just about three to four kilometres from where it started,” Mr. Singh said.

Devendra Singh, who was employed with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and was the owner of the jeep, was driving it when the accident occurred.

Mr. Singh said according to the preliminary inquiry, the driver seemed to be responsible for the mishap.

Eight persons died on the spot and two others died while they were being taken to a nearby hospital. “Those who were injured have been referred to a hospital in Dehradun,” Mr. Singh said.

This is the second road incident in Chakrata within a month.

Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Wednesday, gave orders to the Transport Department to carry out a time-to-time examination of vehicles and drivers, especially in hilly areas in the State.
