Endorsing the wish of Manpreet Singh Badal — the estranged nephew of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and now a Congress leader — to contest against his uncle in the 2017 Assembly elections, State Congress president Capt. Amarinder Singh on Thursday said he would recommend him as the party’s candidate against the Chief Minister from Lambi. “Not only will the party support him, but will also ensure that he wins with a record margin from there,” said Capt. Amarinder. On Wednesday, Manpreet said that it would be a matter of pride for him if the Congress asks him to contest the election against his uncle. He had formed the People’s Party of Punjab during the 2012 Assembly polls after breaking away from the Shiromani Akali Dal in which he was the Finance Minister. In January this year, Manpreet merged his party with the Congress.
