Manipur students protest against police raid in boys’ hostels

February 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - IMPHAL:

Infuriated students of Manipur University (MU) went on the rampage on Friday protesting against the unauthorised raids and searches in the boys’ hostels by the police commandos. They burnt MU properties including tables, chairs and other furniture items.

Talking to reporters, some students said that at 9 a.m. on Friday while they were preparing to go to their classes, police commandos led by an additional police superintendent raided the boys’ hostels on the campus. The students allege that the police did not obtain permission or even informed the MU authority about the raids. All students were called outside one by one along with the hostel wardens and questioned. They also searched all the rooms thoroughly but nothing objectionable was found. The students added that such unauthorised raids had taken place on February 14 also.

Soon after the departure of the police, the students assembled in the hostel ground and held a meeting. Later they dragged out MU properties and furniture and burned the piles near the hostels. The MU officials including Vice-Chancellor Nandakumar Sharma stayed at a safe distance.

The V-C is under pressure to lodge a strong protest with the government over the unauthorised raids. The students said that the police have vitiated the atmosphere with such acts.
