Manipur school students' brave feat

September 01, 2010 01:39 am | Updated 01:39 am IST - IMPHAL

Students of the Johnstone Higher Secondary School here became brave ones by overpowering a self-proclaimed armed rebel and handing him over to the police on Tuesday.

The rebel, whose identity and affiliation are yet to be established, entered the school premises and asked the teachers to pay Rs. 2,000 each as tax to an underground organisation.

When some of the teachers raised objections, he slapped one of them and threatened to kidnap some women teachers if money was not paid. Hearing the ruckus, some students converged at the scene. The extortionist asked them to back out, threatening to whip out his gun. However, the students overpowered him and handed him over to the police.

The students said rebels should leave the educational institutes as a free zone and they should not try to extort money from teachers.

The police recovered the two-wheeler of the extortionist.
