Swine flu claimed its first victim in Manipur with the death of a woman at a private hospital in Imphal on Wednesday morning.

One more person with swine flu-like symptoms died at almost the same time while awaiting test results from a laboratory outside the State. Manipur Health Department officials are yet to comment on the deaths.

The woman’s husband on Tuesday claimed that he had been advised at the centrally-run Regional Institute of Medical Sciences to take his wife to a private hospital back as there were no medicine, ventilator and other facilities. He had further claimed that he had brought his wife to RIMS only because he could not meet medical expenses at the private hospital.

After being sent back from RIMS, the woman died at the private hospital at about 6 a.m.
