December 07, 2013 03:48 pm | Updated 11:46 pm IST - Mumbai:

A commuter on a local train in suburban Mumbai was shot at and injured after a minor altercation with a group of four people on Friday.

The incident happened around 10.30 p.m. near the Nahur station on the central line. Twenty-six-year-old Tabrez Jethwa, a driver by profession, boarded the Ambernath bound train around 10 p.m. to return to his home in Mumbra on the outskirts of Mumbai. Twenty minutes into the journey, the four accused boarded the same compartment. One of them accidentally stepped on Mr. Jethwa’s foot and an argument ensued. One of the accused then pulled out a pistol, pumped two bullets into him and fled.

“The accused used a country made pistol. This points to the involvement of a local gang,” investigating officer Santosh Dhanwate told The Hindu .

Mr. Jethwa was rushed to the government-run Sion hospital. Doctors said his condition was critical but stable.
