: The South District police have arrested a 62-year-old ex-informer of the Income Tax Department for allegedly running a trafficking racket and impersonating as Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Agarwal.

Although the registration of case and the arrest of Safdarjung Enclave resident Pritindra Nath Sanyal (62) happened in the past two days, his activities had first come to light last month when during an Income Tax raid at his residence, the police came across a Russian woman who accused Sanyal of illegally confining her.

She had even slashed her wrist in an attempt to commit suicide while the raid was on, and accused Sanyal of seizing her travel documents.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ishwar Singh added that during the same raid, the I-T Department had learnt that Sanyal had impersonated as Samajwadi Party MP Naresh Agarwal and had repeatedly sent messages to an official of the UP government to expedite a land deal.

Illegal activities

“The authorities had carried out a search and seizure operation in June 2016 at the residences of accused Pritindra Nath Sanyal in S.J. Enclave, Vasant Kunj and Lucknow simultaneously. During the search, incriminating documents indicating his involvements in illegal activities like human trafficking and impersonation came to light. Documentary evidence in the form of WhatsApp Messages and SMS messages were seized from the residence of accused,” said Mr. Singh.

The police, however, did not disclose the details of the land deal concerned and whether the official acted on the instructions given to him. Mr. Agarwal, meanwhile, told the police that he did not know Sanyal nor had he met him ever.
