West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Akash Banerjee and three others, arrested for roughing up traffic police personnel two days ago were granted bail by a city court here on Friday.

The Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (acting) at Alipore granted bail to the accused against a personal bond of Rs.1,000 each, after they were produced before the court.

Akash and his friends were arrested on Wednesday on charges of assaulting traffic police personnel after they violated traffic rules in Kidderpore area of the city.

Allegations that the police officers at the Watgunj thana had let Mr. Banerjee leave without registering a complaint after he introduced himself as the Chief Minister's nephew are also being probed.

Senior police officers at the city police headquarters had said they received instructions from Ms. Banerjee to lodge a complaint and take necessary steps in connection with the incident. Subsequently, the accused were booked under the non-bailable Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code (assault to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty), besides other Sections. The arrested were sent to a day of judicial custody on Thursday.
