Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday appealed to the people to unite against the ongoing ‘political violence' in West Bengal as they had in Nandigram and Singur.

Addressing a rally here to mark the third anniversary of the police firing in Nandigram, Ms. Banerjee said: “Every day murders are taking place on the soil of Bengal. Frequently news of four or five people being killed reaches us. By observing this anniversary we appeal to all people to unite against this terror that has been unleashed, just as you had in the time of Singur or Nandigram.

“On this day many people were killed and many more were killed in the democratic struggles. In their memory, the injustice of this political violence must be protested.”

Asserting that the perpetrators of the violence in Nandigram had not been brought to justice even three years after the event, she alleged that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was trying “to burn down the State.”

“The politics of murder, terror, bombs and guns prevails in West Bengal,” she said. However, her party workers would show restraint and not retaliate.
