West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced the release of 22 prisoners, who are serving life term, ahead of the Bengali New Year.

“All those serving prison terms of over 15 years and in the age group of 50 to 60 years will be released before the Bengali New Year. They will now be able to enjoy mainstream life,” Ms. Banerjee said while announcing the names and other details of the prisoners.

With the fresh lot of 22 prisoners, a total 165 lifers have so far been released by the Trinamool Congress government on the recommendation of the Bandi Mukti Committee, the chief minister said.

Ms. Banerjee said 50 political prisoners had earlier been released by her government.
