Major railway extension projects in Tripura to be over by 2014

February 15, 2010 03:07 pm | Updated 03:08 pm IST - Agartala

The Tripura State capital would be connected with Akhaura railway station in Bangladesh, by 2014, official sources said.

The decision for linking Agartala station with Akhaura, just 13 km from here, was taken during Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina’s recent visit to New Delhi, the sources said.

During Sheikh Hasina’s visit to New Delhi, both the countries on January 12 agreed that a railway line would be built between Akhaura in Bangladesh to Agartala, which could lead to addressing India’s demand for transit through Bangladesh as Kolkata-Dhaka-Akhaura railway connectivity already exists.

The railway track from Lumding in Assam to Agartala would also be converted from narrow gauge to broad gauge and the railway line would be extended upto bordering town Sabroom in South Tripura district by 2014, the sources said.
