Ajit Singh alias Jitaram Choudhury, accused of raping a Japanese tourist, surrendered before the police on Friday, after evading arrest for four days. He has since been arrested.

A private guide, he had sexually assaulted the 20-year-old tourist on Sunday night after befriending her in Jaipur. He fled the city the next day. The police had announced a reward of Rs. 1 lakh on him.

Inspector-General (Jaipur range) D.C. Jain told reporters that Ajit Singh surrendered because he had run out of options. The police were closing in on him and all his associates refused to shield him. Some of his relatives too were under arrest. Also, he had run out of money.

Mr. Jain said 12 teams had fanned out to various places across the country.

After the assault, Ajit Singh had escaped to Delhi on Monday where he stayed at a guest house in Mahipalpur. He then bought a ticket to Chennai from where he intended to go to Puducherry. On the way, he realised that being a small place it would be easier for police to track him down, so he got down at Vijayawada and took a train to Agra. He boarded a bus from Agra and surrendered at the Dudu police station.

The police have already arrested seven persons, including his friends and relatives who helped him.

Meanwhile, the city police have launched a drive against ‘lapkas’ or unlicensed private guides and arrested 50 of them.
