Maharashtra is concerned over incidents of acid attacks, State Home Minister R.R. Patil said here on Tuesday. He was speaking after a meeting on the issue.

“The number of cases has fallen, but it is still a matter of great concern,” Mr. Patil said.

The Central government has laid down stringent punitive measures for perpetrators of such attacks, stipulating imprisonment of 10 years with a fine of Rs. 10 lakh. Maharashtra would urge the Centre for strict implementation of the law, Mr. Patil said. Maharashtra is set to review the Centre’s proposal for State compensation to victims of violence.

CCTV installation

Following the serial explosions in Pune, the State’s proposal to install CCTV cameras has again become the focus of security measures planned for sensitive cities. Last year, when the triple blasts rocked Mumbai, the State government planned to install around 5,000 CCTVs in a phased manner in Mumbai. A year on, this plan has been gathering dust.
