Maharashtra to release officer for probe

September 01, 2010 02:50 am | Updated 02:50 am IST - NEW DELHI

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that it would relieve within a week senior Indian Police Service officer K. Venkatesan to enable him to join the reconstituted Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing post-Godhra riots cases in Gujarat.

A Bench of Justices D.K. Jain, P. Sathasivam and Aftab Alam recorded this undertaking by Sanjay Kardia, counsel for the State, and said that in view of this submission no formal order was necessary.

During the last hearing, SIT chief R.K. Raghavan informed the court that a senior Assam cadre IPS officer, Y.C. Modi, had joined the SIT, but Maharashtra had expressed its inability to relieve Mr. Venkatesan.

In view of this stand, he wanted a formal court order for the induction of Mr. Venkatesan into the SIT.
