Maharashtra government on Tuesday said it would set up a unicode system that will simplify the use of Marathi fonts on the internet.
Chief Minister Ashok Chavan made an announcement in this regard while replying to a debate on Marathi language in the Legislative Council today.
“We have completed 70 per cent work of the unicode system and remaining would be soon over. The unicode system would enable all the users easy access to Marathi fonts on the internet,” Mr. Chavan said, adding even the administrative work at the government level would become faster.
Mr. Chavan said, besides the internet the system would also simplify the use of Marathi language in computers.
BJP MLC Vinod Tawade had earlier pointed out the difficulties in using Marathi fonts on the internet.
Marathi fonts are different on various websites and therefore many sites cannot be opened, he said and demanded that the government intervene and introduce a single unicode system.
The Chief Minister also announced to appoint a committee on the lines of “Hindi Salagar Samitee” at the Centre to monitor if Marathi is being used in the establishments and banks of the Central Government.
“The State has issued resolutions stressing use of Marathi in banks and other establishments of the Centre. The committee would now monitor the implementation of the decision,” Mr. Chavan said.
