May 21, 2013 12:36 am | Updated 12:36 am IST - Mumbai:

Nationalist Congress Party’s MLA from Ashti in Beed district of Maharashtra Suresh Dhas was arrested on Monday on the charge of vandalising a local branch of State Bank of Hyderabad earlier this week.

Local sources told The Hindu that Mr. Dhas surrendered himself at the Patoda police station in Beed.

The MLA’s bail application was quashed and he was remanded in 14-days judicial custody, said the sources.

The legislator and his associates allegedly ransacked the bank last week and roughed up two of its employees after a heated exchange with the bank manager over farmers’ loan applications.

Following this, the Patoda police in Beed district registered a criminal complaint against Mr. Dhas, 10 of his followers and 12 unidentified people on charges of rioting, assault and obstructing government work.
