Maharashtra encounter cop sacked for extortion

June 03, 2014 12:03 am | Updated 12:03 am IST - MUMBAI:

The Maharashtra police has dismissed controversial encounter specialist Ravindra Angre from the force for allegedly trying to extort money from a builder. Mr. Angre, who has gunned down over 50 criminals, was dismissed by an order issued by Director General of Police Sanjiv Dayal on May 15.

According to sources in the State police, Mr. Dayal had ordered a departmental inquiry against Mr. Angre after a Thane-based builder complained that he had received extortion calls from the former encounter specialist. The inquiry conducted by an IPS officer found him guilty.

In 2008, Mr. Angre was arrested after a Thane-based builder Mahesh Wagh filed an extortion case against him. However, a lower court acquitted him for want of evidence. In 2012, he was reinstated in Gadchiroli, but proceeded on leave and did not report to his new posting. Subsequently he was suspended.
