Teachers in Government colleges in Maharashtra may soon have to declare their assets as the State is formulating a policy in this regard.
Confirming the move, Principal Secretary in the Higher and Technical Education Department J. S. Sahariya told PTI “we are planning a policy (on asset declaration by teachers), but it is yet to be finalised.”
The initiative was taken after a Bombay High Court judgement last year, seeking details of properties owned by the teachers in the State.
The move is to ensure that the teachers working in Government colleges and institutes concentrate on their work, an official from the department said.
Once the policy is in place, the teachers would be asked to give in writing details of the property owned by them at the beginning of every academic year. They will also have to mention whether they have any other source of income like teaching in coaching classes or giving private tuitions, the official said.
“The policy would prevent the Government teachers from teaching in private coaching classes and ensure they spend most of the time in colleges,” he said.
