Sanjay Banerjee, a serving Deputy Commissioner of Police with the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Thane, on Saturday committed suicide. He shot himself in the head in front of his wife and two sons, while they were out having lunch in a restaurant.

“He used his service revolver. We have not found any specific reason behind his act,” said a police officer from Kapurbawdi Police station on condition of anonymity. He was declared dead on arrival at a hospital. The body has been sent to the Civil Hospital in Thane for post-mortem.

Mr. Banerjee had served as DCP in the ATS at Aurangabad last year in June, before coming to Thane.

“The motive can be anything from work pressure to family feud. But we have not found any letter with him and cannot say anything right now,” said the police officer. In the evening his family was taken to the police station and their statement was recorded.
