Ameeta Chavan, wife of former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, is likely to contest the Maharashtra Assembly elections from his former constituency Bhokar in Nanded, senior Congress sources told The Hindu . Mr. Chavan vacated the Assembly constituency to contest the recent Lok Sabha elections. While a Congress leader was sanguine that Ms. Chavan would get ticket, Mr. Chavan himself was more circumspect. “It is up to the people of Bhokar and the party to decide. She has been active in the constituency for a long time. In fact, she had handled the campaign for my last Assembly poll.”

The Congress is hoping that by fielding his wife, it will win the Bhokar seat as well. However, Mr. Chavan’s brother-in-law Bhaskarrao Khatkgaokar, who is tipped to join the BJP, is likely to be a problem for the Congress.
