A woman was among the two persons mauled to death by wild leopards in separate incidents in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, officials said on Tuesday. A leopard strayed into Satkoji village in Handwara, 90 km from here, on Monday evening and attacked a group of youth playing in a field, they said.

Mohammad Iqbal (20) died on the spot, while Nazir Ahmad was injured. The animal fled into the nearby forest.

Raja Begum, a middle-aged woman, was killed by a leopard at the Lawoosa-Mawar forest, where she had gone to collect fire wood.

Earlier this month, two children were mauled to death by leopards in Handwara.

Thirty-five people have been killed and 370 injured in attacks by wild animals in the valley in the past two years. Over a dozen leopards and black bears were killed by the villagers during the same period.
