Left to agitate for timely rural polls in West Bengal

April 11, 2013 02:46 am | Updated November 16, 2021 08:16 pm IST - KOLKATA:

The Left Front would organise a sustained campaign demanding that rural polls in West Bengal be held on time, State Left Front Committee chairman Biman Bose said here on Wednesday. “We must initiate a movement for our demand that the panchayat elections must be held on time,” he told journalists after a meeting of the committee.

Mr. Bose said the Left would organise a protest where supporters would court arrest and also organise a convention, but the dates are yet to be finalised.

He said the Left wanted to ensure that the rural polls were held on time and the elected bodies were constituted as per the due process of law.

The issue is currently a matter for the Calcutta High Court to decide on as the State Election Commission has approached the court against the “unilateral decision” of the State government to issue a notification announcing the polls. Mr. Bose said the Left supported the Commission on the concerns it had raised. “The Court has asked political parties not to be involved at this stage, but to raise their concerns once the State Election Commission and the State government have had their say. We shall do that,” he said.
