The Left Front will launch a 45-day-campaign for collecting signatures to ensure food security for all as well as in protest against the rise in prices of essential commodities and deterioration in the law and order situation in West Bengal, State Left Front Committee chairman Biman Bose announced here on Tuesday.
The campaign will begin on December 1 and end on January 15. All the signatures will be submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh or President Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi by the Central leadership of the parties constituting the Left Front, Mr. Bose said. The rally, Mr. Bose said, will draw people from all sections of society.
The Left Front would observe December 6, which marks 20 years of the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, as a day of national unity and harmony in a bid to increase public awareness on the matter, Mr. Bose said.
Referring to recent incidents of communal tension in the country, he said a fresh attempt was being made to spread the venom of communalism by fundamentalists — both Hindu and Muslim — in the country.
Claiming that such forces were at work in West Bengal too, Mr. Bose referred to the recently held by-elections at the Jangipur parliamentary constituency in the State’s Murshidabad district. He said there had been attempts, during the election, to campaign on communal lines.
On the proposed rally in protest of the rise in atrocities against women in the State on November 17, Mr. Bose said people’s freedom, particularly of women, was under threat.
“The State government should ensure security to women so that they can have a free movement. ” Mr. Bose said.
