Normal life was thrown out of gear in Manipur from Wednesday midnight as a result of the 5-day economic blockade imposed by several organisations of the Kukis against Manipur government in protest against its failure to make the report of the magisterial inquiry public.
Following pressure from human rights groups the government had instituted a magisterial inquiry into the January 28 "encounter at Kandangband.
In a statement the NGOs said that they were dismayed by the failure of the government to make the report public.
Hundreds of trucks and other commercial vehicles were stranded along the highways since Wednesday midnight. Most of the trucks were bringing consumer items and construction materials basically meant for the time-bound centrally sponsored schemes. Men and women armed with sticks, slingshots and rocks came out in the highway to impose the blockade.
Police and paramilitary personnel are not seen in adequate numbers.
Prices were slightly hiked and oil pumps have started closing down on the pretext of shortage of stock. However there is no shortage of diesel and petrol for the ubiquitous roadside vendors which are doing brisk business without obstructions.
