PANAJI: The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa, will soon introduce a special programme to teach Konkani to non-Goan students and faculty members.
NIT director Gopal Mugeraya announced this at the third convocation ceremony of the institute held in Margao on Saturday, in the presence of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.
Mr. Mugeraya said the 35-hour course would be for one semester.
He also announced that the institute has initiated a programme to support schoolchildren in the State. Students/volunteers from the institute will visit and brief schoolchildren about the preparations required to get into reputed technology institutes likes IITs and NITs.
Mr. Parrikar urged students to take the path less travelled. He said the aim of engineers is to look for sustainable development, for which first they should bridge the gap between the rural and urban sectors.
“Engineers must make technology available and easily accessible to all,” said the Chief Minister, an IIT graduate himself.
Mr. Parrikar said engineers should also take time off to work for society in the areas of primary education, pollution, water, afforestation and garbage cleaning.
