In a major breakthrough, the city police on Saturday arrested two persons in connection with the alleged rape of a 37-year-old woman at gunpoint in a moving car in the heart of the city on February 6.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had claimed that the incident was “staged” to “malign the government.” But the police had finally concluded that the victim was indeed raped.
Stating that those arrested have admitted to their involvement in the crime, Damayanti Sen, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), pointed out that they, however, were not the persons whom the victim had named in her complaint.
The victim said she was “relieved and satisfied that finally justice had been done.” “Finally my battle is over,” she told a local television channel.
The police are on the lookout for the others suspected to have been accompanying those arrested on the night of the incident. They include the person believed to have committed the rape.
The arrested had faked the names of others while introducing themselves to the victim.
