An executive engineer of the Manipur Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) kidnapped by militants on December 3 last for ransom, has been freed by his abductors, officials said on Friday.

The kidnappers released L. Dhaballo at Langol area in Imphal West district last evening and it was not known whether the ransom was paid for his release, they said.

The militants had apparently demanded a huge sum of money as ransom from his department.

Two engineers of Manipur electricity department, Executive Engineer TH Tomalchand and Section Officer L. Mangi, who were kidnapped on November 6 for ransom, have not yet been freed, they said.

The militants of newly-formed United People’s Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) who had abducted the two had demanded a sum, running into several lakhs, for their release, they added.

The UPPK had earlier said in a statement that the two were kidnapped not for ransom but for clarification of an official matter concerning their department.
