The BJP’s troubles in Maharashtra, over allegations of corruption against senior Minister Eknath Khadse and demands for his sacking, reached the court of party president Amit Shah on Thursday. But the issue appeared no closer to resolution.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, ostensibly in Delhi to attend a programme related to the Ministry of Skill Development, called on Mr. Shah at the party headquarters on Ashok Road. “I have handed over a factual report to the party president and discussed the matter with him. The party will decide whatever appropriate action has to be taken,” he said.
Mr. Khadse has been accused by the Opposition of impropriety in the acquisition of a plot near Pune at a throwaway price. He has denied any wrongdoing, but the charges have dented the Fadnavis government’s claim that it was corruption-free.
Mr. Khadse, who, hails from a powerful OBC community, has a strong support base and can play a vital role in the Legislative Council. “There are 10 seats up for election on June 10 and the BJP is in a position to get four of these on its own strength. The party has fielded five candidates and is supporting an independent,” said a senior office-bearer.
One of these candidates could be asked to withdraw from the fray to ease the party’s dependence on Mr. Khadse’s influence, he said. “The last date for withdrawal of candidates is Friday. Let’s see,” said the source.
There is also a talk that Mr. Khadse might be moved out after the June 10 election in a general Cabinet reshuffle. The BJP president, however, is playing his cards close to his chest.
