Opposition parties accused Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of shielding his principal secretary Rajendra Kumar, who was arrested by the CBI on Monday on corruption charges.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta said that the AAP government was protecting “corrupt officials”.
Mr. Gupta added that the AAP government had come to power on the promise of ridding Delhi of corruption, but had “politicised the a issue for political gain”.
He added that the CBI had prima facie evidence that Mr. Kumar had abused his power in a Rs.50-crore scam, but the CM was “trying to obstruct the investigation”.
The BJP leader demanded that Mr. Kumar and other officials involved be suspended immediately.
‘Politicising the issue’
The Delhi Congress too accused the CM of politicising the issue.
“This is a case of corruption against a senior officer. Mr. Kejriwal should not try to politicise the matter, especially since he is a self-proclaimed anti-corruption crusader. It is surprising that he is trying to shield the accused before the investigation is completed,” said Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Sharmistha Mukherjee.
Ms. Mukherjee added that the BJP had been misusing the CBI, but the AAP government should demand a court-monitored inquiry in the case and not shy away from the investigation.
