he Gurgaon Police, after meeting leaders of corporate houses, has decided to conduct air quality surveys and count the number of vehicles before and after car-free days in the four identified zones — DLF Cyber City, Huda City Centre-Subhash Chowk, Golf Course Road and Udyog Vihar Phase-IV.

The decision was taken during a meeting between Gurgaon Police officers, representatives of several corporate houses and the Rapid Metro to discuss the hitches observed on the car-free day on September 22 and to seek suggestions for improvement.

Held at the office of Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Bharti Arora, the meeting was attended by all organising and supporting partners of Car-Free Day.

This included officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon, Rapid Metro, NASSCOM, WRI-EMBARQ India, The Raahgiri Foundation, Road Safety Officers, Shuttl.com , OLA Shuttles, Nagarro, Fidelity, and others.

“The vehicular count and air quality surveys will be done by Embarq and Rapid Metro on Monday and Tuesday. The slogan this time would be ‘Vote For Abki Baar No Car’. We also plan to carry out a march from Maharana Pratap Chowk to Udyog Vihar Phase-IV on Monday to create awareness,” said Ms. Bharti.

The Gurgaon Police will also ask cinema halls and radio stations to run advertisements on Car-Free Day to generate more enthusiasm. To discourage use of cars, the Gurgaon Police will continue to tow away vehicles that are found parked on the streets.

Ms. Arora has also written to the General Manager at Gurgaon (Haryana Roadways), requesting him to appoint inspectors for the four corridors and ensure that buses run by the Haryana Roadways halt at designated stops for the convenience of commuters.

On Saturday, she visited the Cyber City, Udyog Vihar and Shyam Chowk area with a team of traffic officers to discuss the decongestion plan here.

Apart from this, Ms. Arora and other police officials will continue to commute to their offices on bicycles.

Also, the Rapid Metro in association with Shuttl.com will offer bus services from the metro stations to major office hubs.

At present, Shuttl.com helps connect Vodafone Belvedere Towers station to Udyog Vihar and Sikanderpur Station to Sector 56 via Golf Course Road.

The Rapid Metro and Shuttl.com now plan to introduce more routes based on demand from commuters.
