Katwa rape: two more arrested

Two persons were arrested on Saturday in connection with the alleged rape of a woman at Katwa in West Bengal on February 25, Bardhaman Superintendent of Police S. H. Mirza told The Hindu over telephone.

A district court remanded Nayan Sheikh and Farid Sheikh in police custody till March 13.

The arrests come within a week of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's contention that there was no truth in the woman's allegation. Ms. Banerjee's remark — that there was no evidence of rape in the medical report and that the incident was staged by the CPI(Marxist) as the woman's family was a supporter of that party — triggered a public outcry and criticism from the Opposition.

It is alleged that on February 25, an armed gang held up a train near Katwa and looted passengers. The woman lodged a complaint that when she tried to resist the robbers, they dragged her out of the train and raped her near the track.

On February, 27 two persons were arrested in connection with the robbery.
